“Share Chinese Music with the World”- 1st High-End International Forum on the Overseas Spread of Chinese Music Culture and Theme Concert Rounded Off
The “Share Chinese Music with the World”- 1st High-End International Forum on the Overseas Spread of Chinese Music Culture and Theme Concert sponsored by Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM), organized by Music Confucius Institute (MCI) Office at CCOM and co-organized by Musicology Department, Traditional Instruments Department, Composition Department and International Affairs Office was grandly held at the Concert Hall of Academic Building of CCOM at 15:00, December 9, 2013.
In recent years, music has been playing a more and more important role among the Chinese culture educational and transmission activities held by the Confucius Institutes around the world. The overall planning of Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban has been converting from mainly teaching Chinese to develop into “a comprehensive platform for Chinese culture’s external exchange”, characteristic Confucius Institutes have been successively established. In June, 2012, during then President Hu Jintao’s first visit to Denmark, with the support by Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban, CCOM and Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM) jointly established the world’s first Music Confucius Institute that specializes in the education and spread of Chinese music.
During the over one year after its foundation, in line with the spirit of sharing, harmony and development, MCI has successively held a number of grand events including “1st MCI Music Festival & Opening Event” in Denmark, “Special Concert at the Summer Castle of Danish Royal Family” in France which have caught general attention and gained fine reactions among the mainstream society and press circles of China, Denmark and France, and gained unanimous appreciation by the Chinese State Council, the Chinese Embassy in Denmark and the Danish Royal Family. MCI has been advancing constantly towards the goal of building it into the “Chinese Music Culture Centre” in Europe.
The “1st High-End International Forum on the Overseas Spread of Chinese Music Culture and Theme Concert” was held under the background of the rapid overseas development of the spread of Chinese music culture with the Confucius Institutes as the carrier and the basis of the concrete practice of MCI. A dozen of experts and scholars from the United States, Denmark, South Korea and China and foreign and Chinese directors of Confucius Institutes had been invited to deliver keynote speeches and conduct discussions on the topics of problems and modes of the overseas spread of Chinese music culture, especially the developmental and operational experience of Confucius Institute in the music culture circle, etc. The forum was hosted by the Project Manager of MCI Office Dr. Zhang Lexin.
The activity had attracted a dozen of medias to come to the spot to do interviews and reports including China Daily, China Culture Daily, China Education Daily, China Art News, Music Weekly, People's Daily Overseas Edition, “Chinese Folk Music” magazine, English Channel of CCTV, China National Radio, www.huanqiu.com, www.youth.cn, etc. Before the start of the forum, one of the keynote speakers, Secretary of Party Committee and Chairperson of MCI Board Guo Shulan, and the President of University of Michigan of USA Lestter P. Monts delivered addresses one after another, they wished the forum a complete success. Mr. Wang Feng specially came to the forum to express his congratulations on behalf of Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban.
In the forum, each expert made distinctive speeches, some are about teasing out the history and characteristics of the overseas spread of Chinese music; some put forward strategies and patterns for the overseas spread of Chinese music; some are summaries of the music cultural activities and teaching management experiences of their own Confucius Institutes; some drew the outlines of the current development status of Chinese traditional instrumental music and look forward to the prospect; while some discussed more specific translation of literature, selection of tracks, all of which had aroused fine reactions and warm discussions.
Between the two sessions of keynote speeches, a “Share Chinese Music with the World” theme concert was held. Professors and students from the Traditional Instruments Department and Orchestral Department of CCOM performed traditional Chinese music quartet, percussion trio, guanzi and guqin solos, and original Chinese and western instrumental ensemble, etc. which embodied the idea of “integration of East and West, classic and modern”. The collision between musical inspiration and theoretical thinking pushed the atmosphere of the forum to a climax.
After this event, the sponsor will render the collected works of the forum to Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban as a reference and guidance for making relevant policies, further promoting and expanding the influence of the forum and achieving a long-lasting effect.
