During the Tenth Beijing Music Festival, the artistic director of Orchestre de Paris, the well-known pianist and conductor Christoph Eschenbach visited the Central Conservatory of Music. He gave a master class to piano students of CCOM in the afternoon of Oct. 23rd. At 1:50pm, Mr. Eschenbach arrived at the Recital Hall of Study Building which was overcrowded with the audiences. Before the master class, the Vice Chair of Piano Department, Prof. Pan Chun welcomed Mr. Eschenbach and introduced him to the audiences solemnly. The maestro responded the enthusiastic audiences with smiles and expressed his thanks.
The first student was Wang Chun who came from the affiliated middle school of CCOM. He played Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit. Mr. Eschenbach heaped praise on his performance. Then, he instructed him in details how to make the sound of piano more lyric and musical. The second student was Li Meiyan who came from the piano department of CCOM. She played Brahms Fantasia Op. 116. According to the different styles of music, the maestro pointed out different problems and showed different ways to resolve them. His careful observation on the score and skillful treatment on music had given the audiences a profound impression.
Because of the limitation of time, Mr. Eschenbach had to leave at 3:30pm. One and half hour master class was short. However, the impact that the class left on the audiences would last for a long time. We were not only listened to the great maestro's magic playing, but also realized a great musician's personal charm.
