In 1996, the well-known conductor Zubin Mehta had a chance to listen to some symphony orchestras' performances during his performing tour in China. He found that the brass section of the orchestras in China should be further improved. Hence, on the way of his performing tour, he decided to appropriate fifty thousand dollars from the Suntory Hall-Mehta Scholarship in Japan for Chinese brass students to study abroad.
The Central Conservatory of Music selected Wang Dajiang, a French horn student, and Chen Guang, a trumpet student, to study in Germany and Austria respectively. With the financial aid from Mehta Scholarship, they studied very hard in years and had obtained excellent results. Now, they all have returned from abroad. Wang Dajiang is a member of China Philharmonic Orchestra. As one of the best trumpet players in China, Chen Guang is currently the faculty member of CCOM and also holds the position of guest principal trumpet in many major Chinese orchestras.
On Dec. 30th and 31st , 2007, maestro Zubin Mehta conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to present 2008 New Year Concert in Beijing the Great Hall of the People. The fourteen brass students from CCOM participated in their performances. The maestro warmly acclaimed them for their great improvement and autographed to wish them and the Music Festival of Central Conservatory of Music successes.
